INGompetent
Maybe they weren't prepared, or didn't realize how many "15,000" really is.
It had to be something, because it's not like ING has never put on a big race before.
OK, it's my bad for not taking my bib number with me. However, a single file line that extends across a city block, over the skyway crossing the street, and halfway through another building is NOT an effective way to get people's packets out to them.
How about rather than organizing by bib numbers... last names?!
After a few minutes of standing in the line in the building across the street, a guy came up and said hey the line is too long, you need to wrap it back around this way. So the entire tail of the line had to maneuver back into the original building. By the time I actually got out of there about an hour later, the line had grown from its original wraparound to reach back OUT the door of the place!
This race has 15,000 people in it. Last November, I went up to the check-in tables at the NYC Marathon without any trouble. That race has 40,000. What changed?
Eventually, they started taping a list of last names (!) and bib numbers to the wall. Too bad by that time you were nearly at the end of the line. They were also randomly walking through the crowd and letting people with their bib numbers go to the front of the line.
Sheesh.
Once I was finally through the line everything went pretty smoothly. Unfortunately for everyone still in the line, they decided to start only letting in small groups. So there were a bunch of registration tables with nobody waiting at all. Just a bunch of volunteers standing around wondering where all their people were.
I look forward to this race, but I sure hope the corral/starting system are a lot more efficient than packet pickup.
Maybe the first day of pickup was just a mess, and maybe tomorrow there'll be no trouble, but if you're going... TAKE YOUR BIB NUMBER!
Ah I almost forgot to mention... the orange and blue colors of the commemorative hoodies are just too Florida for me to wear. It's a big "GA" in orange, with the rest in blue, or the reverse. I'm not even a football fan, but really... this is Georgia. I think if you're from here you just grow up with an ingrained aversion to combinations of orange and blue. Too bad though, they look pretty nice. Maybe if I just colored out the orange part on the blue ones. I am pretty handy with the big black Sharpie.

Oh, man. I'm sorry Jason. Thanks for the words of wisdom.
